There are no single rooms or shared spaces; it's all about complete privacy. This focus aligns with their marketing strategy, which emphasizes family vacations and pet-friendly listings.
On the other hand, Airbnb offers a wider range of options, from single rooms to entire homes, and even unique accommodations like boats. This variety is reflected in their numbers, with Airbnb boasting between 6 and 7 million listings worldwide, over three times as many as Vrbo's 2 million.

Airbnb has been criticized for not being upfront about the total cost of a booking, often adding cleaning and service fees towards the end of the booking process. Imagine being a full-time nurse in Reykjavík, Iceland, and managing Airbnb properties in the United States. Sounds challenging, right? Seth Sutherland and his wife are doing just that, and they're making a tidy profit in the process.
Sutherland's journey into the world of Airbnb began with a love for travel and a fascination with the unique vibes of different Airbnb properties. After renting out his house in Tennessee when he moved to Iceland, he decided to delve into the short-term rental space. He bought a condo in Orlando to rent out, but after realizing the profit margins were slim, he sold it and took a different route.
An opportunity presented itself when an investor was looking for a cohost to manage his Airbnb units across the U.S. Sutherland took the plunge and began cohosting three of the investor's units. They added two more units over time, and now they manage five properties in total.
The cohosting arrangement works on a revenue-sharing basis. Sutherland and his wife take 20% of the gross revenue for managing all aspects of the short-term rental. This includes guest and cleaner communication, pricing strategy, and listing updates. They make around $1,000 per month, peaking at about $1,500 in the summer.
Despite the time difference and the challenges of managing properties remotely, Sutherland spends only about three hours a week on cohosting duties. The Airbnb platform makes it easy to manage the listings, and most of the work involves responding to guest queries and resolving issues.
